In the early 60s farmers were anxiously looking for a way to put
in the market their main produce milk. With this as a common goal,
a group of 12 leading farmers and a Puerto Rican counterpart joined
together in 1966 with the goal of founding the Rica pasteurizing
plant. The company was founded under the dynamic entrepreneurial
of its first acting CEO Mr. Marino Cáceres.
Rica was a pioneer producing grade A milk,
introducing modern packaging while leading the industry to a profitable
era where a standardized quality control exist.
Nowadays the Rica Group, a completely Dominican
owned corporate group, is composed of Pasteurizadora Rica in the
capital city of Santo Domingo, Pasteurizadora Cibao in the city
of Santiago and the Dominican Citric Consortium located in Villa
Altagracia, being this jointly operated with the Sugar Council of
the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Citric Consortium currently
has over a million orange trees scattered throughout more than 2300
acres of land.
The track of successes has continued throughout
the 90s with the introduction of a new line of UHT (Ultra High Temperature
pasteurizing) products such as milk and other beverages, which last
up to 6 month without the need of being refrigerated. This process
is complemented with the use of the aseptic packaging called “Tetra
Pack” guaranteeing the freshness of the product. The UHT process
allows Rica the opportunity to offer its products in the global
market with an excellent quality at competitive prices.
The Rica Group in the last couple of years
has invested over US$12, 000,000 on the modernization and update
of its production line and all of its equipments which include the
UHT production line.
By providing solutions to social problems, the Rica Group has demonstrated
its concern and interest in the wellbeing of all the members our
community. To give an example: Rica serves milk to children of low
income families thru a State program that provides breakfast at
public schools; it also donates its products to several hospitals
and healthcare centers throughout the country.
Since 1975, Dr. Julio Brache operates as
the CEO of the Rica Group. He remembers taking 6 months off from
his duties as a general surgeon and director of one of the most
important hospitals in the country to take over the management of
the Rica Group in 1971, where he has since stayed. Currently eleven
members of the Brache and Cáceres family take an active role
in the Rica Group. These, along with more than 3,000 other employees,
work hand in hand to guarantee the leadership of the company in
the dairy and citric industry.
